| What to ask a potential
mobile disco company or DJ for your function
The are many questions to ask a potential
mobile disco company when you are looking for a disco/DJ for
your function.
We specialise in weddings....but we regularly
provide great music at Corporate functions, Primary schools
and 21st's. It's important you feel comfortable with the person
you are going to choose. We will go out of our way to put
you at ease. We are happy to provide verbal references or
see our 'WhyUs' page for written references.

All too often the almighty dollar makes the
decision! Although price is important it can also be the difference
between a good and a bad night.
Below are a few questions and things to ask and look out for
when selecting a mobile disco or DJ. We are sure they will
help you select the good from the bad, the helpful from the
inflexible and value for money from a rip off!
Pricing Questions
What are the charges?
Get a fixed price and if you are not sure on a finish time
make sure you have a quote for extra hours.
Are there additional travel charges?
Do they charge extra to set up in the afternoon or when it's
convenient for you?
Is background music during the meal an extra?
What we do at Capital Disco:
We will give you a fixed quote for the night
and in general this will cover you from dinner right through
to the end of the night.
In most cases we do not charge for extra hours, to set up
in the afternoon or for traveling charges unless it's outside
the Wellington region. When you confirm your function with
us we will back this up in writing.
Deposits/Booking Policy
Does the DJ or Disco company take deposits?
Will they back up the booking in writing?
What we do at Capital Disco:
We do not require a deposit. We simply trust
that our customers will let us know as soon as possible should
their circumstances change. Taking a deposit does not , in
our opinion, make a DJ or any other service provider any more
likely to turn up on the day. It's just one more hassle. We
have not let one customer down since 1986. Consumers Institute
recommends deposits should be no more than 10-15% of the total
fee.
We will provide you with a letter of confirmation
which details the price, venue and the date of the event.
We give you our word that we will turn up on the day. We also
have a plan B and C should something extraordinary happen.
Setting Up
Will the disco be set up in the afternoon
or at a time that will suit you?
Setting up should be done prior to your arrival
not during your meal!
What we do at Capital Disco:
In most cases we set up in the afternoon
at no extra cost or we arrange a time that suits you.
Equipment
Most disco companies and DJ's use PC's or
Laptops for their music these days. This is simply because
it's a far better way of delivering excellent quality sound
without CD's or records jumping etc. The downside is that
computers can crash . . . ouch
Do they use professional equipment specifically
made for the purpose? Do they have a back up...just in case?
Do they have a cordless microphone available
for speeches?
What we do at Capital Disco:
We use only purpose made equipment. To avoid
any issues with a computer failure we carry a spare laptop
to ALL functions. We also have two other back up plans....touch
wood none have been brought into effect yet! We use music
software specifically designed for mobile disco's. We can
also supply a cordless microphone for speeches at no extra
cost.
See our equipment
page to see the list of equipment manufacturers we choose
to use along with some pictures of what we bring with us.
Personal Hygiene & Dress Standards
This is one of the most difficult questions
to ask. It's not like you can say 'did you have a shower today?'...well
not really eh!!!! You can ask your DJ to dress appropriately
for the occasion. A DJ turning up in a tuxedo to your 21st
or even a wedding may be considered overkill. If what your
DJ wears is important to you, then check with them to make
sure their attire suits your occasion.
What we do at Capital Disco:
You can trust us to dress to the occasion.
This is usually suit pants, a dress shirt and or jacket. If
this is not what you would like just ask!
The DJ
Make sure the person you are talking to is
the person who is going to provide the music at the function.
Many companies have a number of DJ's and you may get someone
who is not fully trained or hasn't been in the business for
long....or worse!
What we do at Capital Disco:
There is only one of me and if I'm booked
that's it! We do not have anyone else working for us and we
are happy to keep it that way. We will recommend others in
the industry if we are unavailable.
Music And Requests
Music can make or break a night. It's imperative
that any potential DJ will play requests, work the crowd and
make sure what is played is appropriate. Are there any particular
songs that you want as part of your night. Is there a theme
for the night?
Ask what sort of music selection they have?
Ask to see the list.
What we do at Capital Disco:
We make sure that we have sourced any music
you require before the night. We will work with you and your
guests to play requests throughout the night.....we believe
that requests are a big part of the night. If there are specific
songs you would like, that we don't have, we will endeavor
to get them for you.
